Fighting Those Winter Blues: By Swimming?
January 15, 2009
Yes! You can find yourself enjoying a dip in the pool even when it's frigid outside. There are plenty of great indoor pools around, some of which require a very low fee to enjoy all winter long.
We take our daughter swimming at least once a week (sometimes more) usually in the afternoon after her nap. Nothing makes her happier (she's a complete fish, jumping into the pool on her own and even swimming end to end by herself with just arm floaties on), and nothing makes her sleep better at night. It's also some of the best mommy and toddler time we spend. Best of all, I get a bit of exercise in too!
Here are some of the great indoor pools and pool clubs in the Philadelphia area.
YMCA
You cannot beat your local YMCA. Where I live in Delaware County (click here for my YMCA's info), I can go to the Lansdowne YMCA on weekends and the Ridley Area YMCA during weekdays. If you only want swimming a couple days a week, a Family Program Membership to the YMCAs in Delaware County is only $56 a year, and allows swimming on the weekends during recreational swim times. Find your local YMCA here.
Private Pools
More expensive but often offering more in the way of amenitites are your local indoor pool clubs. In New Jersey, you've got Sahara Sams opening this March (where a yearly membership is at least $318), which is also great for birthday parties and one-shot visits (one day admission is a bit high, in my opinion). In the northwestern suburbs, the wonderful Greater Plymouth Community Center offers a fun swim spot (but family memberships can run $500 a year). If you know of a great private pool club with indoor facilities, please add it in the comments section!
