Festival of Lights

December 22, 2008

Hanukkah is a beautiful Jewish holiday, but as my Jewish friends are quick to tell me, it is NOT the Jewish Christmas. Not even close.

Hanukkah is the celebration of the regaining of the Jew's holy temple from Greek soldiers who had fouled the temple and stolen much of its treasures. But the victorious Jews found enough oil to light the Menorah for one night, but by a miracle the oil lasted for eight whole nights.

Every years Jewish families around the world celebrate the holiday over eight nights, lighting candles and giving presents.

If you'd like to learn more about this beautiful holiday, go visit the National Museum of American Jewish History, located right at Independence Hall.

And if your family is Jewish and you are looking for something to do on Christmas day, check out the museum's Annual Day of Family Fun on December 25th. You'll find music, activites, food, crafts and more!
