Best Local Holiday Performances

December 18, 2008

Philadelphia has plenty to entertain the preschool set during the holidays. I know I have my favorites, but there's something out there for everyone! Here's a few suggestions that are some of my favorites.

1. The Nutcracker. The Pennsylvania Ballet has been doing amazing, perfect performances of the The Nutcracker for years now--it's a must not miss event each Christmas season. A tip: go early in the season, and go on a weeknight. While there are three performances each Saturday, they can get very crowded.

2. A Christmas Carol. My favorite local production of this masterpiece is at the Hedgerow Theater in Media. This amazing little theater--located in an old barn--has not a single bad seat. Best of all, they offer a one-hour version of the story through the eyes of Tiny Tim that skips the scary ghosts--perfect for tiny tots!

3. Philadelphia Boys Choir. This amazing group of singing boys does extensive performances throughout the area during the holidays, celebrating every winter holiday you can think of. Check the website for the performance for you.

Sadly, my favorite event--seeing the movie It's a Wonderful Life on the big screen--no longer happens. For several years the Prince Music Theater hosted an annual showing of this holiday classic, and it was just wonderful to see it this way. Maybe one day they'll bring it back.
